Successful debt management is not an accident – nor is it uncommon. In the Greater Toronto Area, there are literally hundreds of thousands of people who are successfully managing their debt. They are not being hounded by their creditors, are not getting collection calls – and have no past due bills.
Most of the people who are successful with debt today have made debt mistakes in the past. However, they fixed their mistakes, learned from them – and then moved on.
An excellent example of this, is a successful woman we know, who owns her own home and has no debt:
Shortly after getting her first full-time job, she applied for and got her first credit card. Suddenly, she felt as if every door in the city was open to her. She began shopping in earnest – and within a couple of months had run up several thousands of dollars on her card.
One day, as she was leaving an upscale boutique, where she had just purchased an expensive gift – she had an epiphany. She realized that she had just spent several hundred dollars on something she would never have bought if she had had to save up for it first. This was her debt management awakening.
For the first time, she seriously looked at her credit card debt and was horrified when she realized how much interest she was going to have to pay – and how long it was going to take her to pay off her debt. After checking carefully, she decided to get a personal loan from her bank (at a much lower interest rate), to pay off the credit card.
As she signed the loan, she promised herself she would never get into this kind of trouble again. She backed up her resolution by cutting up her credit card – and beginning a serious, life-long commitment to living on a cash-only basis.
Today, she will tell you it was the ‘best’ mistake she ever made with money. By learning that lesson at a young age – before it had gotten totally out of control, she was able to fix the error quickly, learn a valuable lesson at a relatively low cost – and acquire a life-long aversion to debt.
If you have made mistakes with debt – fix them, learn from them and move on.
